62% of Hotels Still Take Card Payments over the Phone

In the digital age, there’s something quite jarring about asking customers to call out their 16-digit card number over the phone.

We’re all so accustomed to seamless online experiences now. Scribbling down payment details and punching numbers into a terminal just feels wrong.

And it is.

Taking hotel payments by phone is clunky and time-consuming for clients. It’s a data protection and compliance minefield. It can become a real drain on operational resources and can cause payment administration to quickly snowball.

It can also cost you revenue. Over the phone payments are less secure. They are more prone to fraud and more susceptible to malicious chargebacks. Hotels know this.

In a recent study by Prommt of Irish Hotels Federation members, 85% of the hotels surveyed said that GDPR and PCI compliance was important in relation to payment processing.

In the same survey, however, 62% of hotels said that they still took card information over the phone.

The biggest reason for this was a lack of awareness about a safe and secure alternative that wouldn’t add friction to the customer experience.

Thankfully, Prommt means that help is now at hand.

Increasing numbers of hotels across Ireland and the UK are now turning to us in order to eliminate the risky, costly and time-consuming process of taking hotel payments over the phone.

Prommt provides hotels with a better way to request, collect and manage remote payments and delivers a wide range of benefits beyond eliminating the need for employees to take credit card numbers over the phone…
