Toomey Motor Group puts Pay by Bank in the driving seat
Buying a car is one of the biggest payments most people make. For Toomey Motor Group, a dealership trading across Essex since 1932, that moment matters as much as the sale itself.
Toomey has long taken payment for cars by card and bank transfer. Both work, but neither is built for high value transactions. Card fees eat into margin, transfers can take hours to clear, and neither gives a dealer certainty out of hours, right when a customer is ready to collect their new car.
Toomey now offers customers Pay by Bank, delivered through Prommt‘s branded payment portal in partnership with Payit by NatWest. Customers pay straight from their banking app on a page that looks and feels like Toomey, with no card or bank details to type in and no wait for a transfer to land.
Certainty before the keys change hands
Pay by Bank gives Toomey real time confirmation* of funds on both sides, so staff can hand over the keys with confidence instead of waiting on a bank to confirm a transfer.
*Most payments land almost instantly through the Faster Payments Service. Occasionally a bank holds a payment for extra checks, in which case it’s guaranteed to arrive within 2 hours once approved.
Lower costs with Pay by Bank
Pay by Bank costs a fraction of the equivalent card fees. Toomey kept its existing card and transfer options and added Pay by Bank alongside them. Adoption has grown steadily as customers choose it for themselves.
For customers, the appeal is simplicity: no card numbers or sort codes to share or get wrong, a payment made from an app they already use.
The result is a payment process with fewer sticking points for Toomey, and a faster, simpler way to pay for its customers.
Gary Rumsby, Brand Manager at Toomey Motor Group, agreed: “(with Prommt and Payit) the customer journey has been improved… tenfold.”
A branded, secure journey
With Prommt, every payment stays wrapped in the Toomey brand, from the request through to confirmation. Customers see a journey they recognise rather than a generic banking page, which keeps trust with Toomey throughout the transaction.
Pay by Bank costs a fraction of the equivalent card fees, giving dealerships a lower cost way to take payment.
Wesley Thorne, Brand Manager, said: “we were taking about 5% of payments in this way. Now we’re up to 40%. And last month we took over £5 Million. So it’s saving us money and just making things quicker and easier for everybody, us and our customers.”
“So the best thing about taking on Prommt through NatWest was the ease for the customer. It sends a link straight to the customer. They get an email to say they’ve paid it. We get an email back from NatWest to say that it’s been paid. Everyone knows what’s happening. We have our confirmation and we can release the car.”

“Customers are feeding back to us that most things they pay for online now they pay for using an app. There’s benefits for customers and for us. The biggest one for customer is it gives them a choice of ways to pay, whatever is most convenient for them. And from us, we’re getting the money in instantaneously. We’ve increased percentage wise. I think initially we were taking about 5% of payments in this way. Now we’re up to 40%. And last month we took over £5 Million. So it’s saving us money and just making things quicker and easier for everybody, us and our customers.”
